Question from Prof. Diana Laurillard’s keynote session #3

 Not infrequently teachers spend too much time on the processes (designing, preparing) then the learning & content. Already teachers are fighting for time to teach and educate. What’s your advice to balance these requirements? What matters most?

  1. What makes teaching so complex is that it all matters. The framework I put up shows all the different ways in which teachers support students: presenting the concepts, responding to questions, guiding and giving feedback, devising the practice environment, ensuring they link concepts and practice, creating the means for learners to discuss and collaborate, and guiding them in these processes.
    The technology can help teachers to manage their workload across all these areas by enabling them to build on, adopt, adapt and reuse the digital learning designs and products that others have developed, to support students in working together online without the teacher being present, submitting their joint questions, ideas, or products. It is also sometimes possible to use computers to do some formative assessment – but multiple choice questions have to be used with care, to be sure students don’t guess.
    Teachers reusing, sharing and building on each others’ effective teaching ideas – this could help the problem of balancing workload. Most important is to understand and manage how teachers spend their time in the different aspects of their work.
