Question from Prof. Diana Laurillard’s keynote session #11

How do we measure the effectiveness of online learning to promote 21st century skills in our students? Any tools?

  1. Skills that can be practised through the technology can often be evidenced through the technology.
If the skills outcome is the skill of presentation or communication, for example, the learners can present their slides in a synchronous online environment like Elluminate, while other students simultaneously rate their clarity, interest, influence.. etc, and then do the same for each other.
If it is the skill of information handling, use a search engine, and see how many relevant hits they can find for a question set to them. What you measure is dependent on the specific learning outcome - the effectiveness is often measurable, or can be evidenced through their practice as recorded by their use of the technology.
We should be able to use the same kinds of techniques that we use to measure the effectiveness of classroom learning. But the technology can also be deployed to make the data collection easier.
